Jack is back

Just Jack is back with some infectious new tunes that take their cue from acid jazz as much as UK hip hop, says David Smyth. So check him out.

Just Jack
Bar Academy Islington, N1

North London's Jack Allsopp has had a long journey back to the cusp of fame since he was briefly billed as the new Streets four years ago. His record label folded and promising debut album The Outer Marker did little. Second time around, he's got a new deal and a raft of infectious new tunes that take their cue from acid jazz as much as UK hip hop. Showing them off to small crowds initially, this is the first of three weekly gigs in Islington. By the time they're over, he should have had his first proper hit with the effortlessly funky Starz in Their Eyes, and be looking to book a few venues with a bit more room. (020 7288 4400). Tonight, 7.30pm.
