Jamelia cuts through the hype

British teenage R&B girl-in-waiting Jamelia Davis has had so much praise shovelled on to her young shoulders it's a wonder she can move for the hyperbole. The media-styled flava of the month, is variously described as the "queen" of her scene and the "saviour" of a particularly anodyne off-shoot of the American-dominated market which regularly throws up people such as Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Mary J and the whole TLC brigade.

Jamelia's success thus far has been off the back off her baroque, neoclassical singles Money and Call Me, both received with rapturous acclaim last night by a well-heeled and ultra-hip crowd. Transfer this just a notch above showcase event to sundry northern towns and it might fare slightly less well.

The cliché about not running before you can walk springs to mind. Still, in Jamelia's favour, she did reveal a warm personality, a more than off-the-shoulder stage craft and sufficient musical ideas to tide her over once the PAs stop and the bums-on-seats business begins.

Her Drama album, while no classic, contains the fodder for a trek about the charts. Guilty, and the next single Boy Next Door, maintain the fizz and the commercial edge she needs. At the moment Jamelia is simply a kid in a grown-up world. If she has the application to go with her talents, then, maybe she'll get more than that mandatory 15 minutes' worth of fame.
