Junior Boys deserve a place at pop music's senior school

Despite their youthful name, Junior Boys are fast becoming senior citizens.

Canadian duo Matt Didemus and Jeremy Greenspan are now on to their third album of indie electronic music - or "indietronica", if you're young and trendy like last night's crowd.

Visually and musically, Junior Boys remain an odd proposition.

Didemus is a waif-like techno-whizz, who creates otherworldy sounds while standing motionless behind his mixing desk; Greenspan is the burly everyman, swapping between guitar and keyboards while singing in a breathy baritone.

When it worked, it was wonderful. Parallel Lines was synthetic soul of the highest calibre, building on throbbing bass and scattering synths to a hypnotic refrain about "Odds, ends and final amends".

Elsewhere, the pounding funk of Hazel was the closest thing to a crossover hit in their hour-long set, with Greenspan's voice moving to a full-throated howl for its radio-ready chorus.

When they took their foot off the gas, they stalled.

The icy synths of Birthday were lost in the Garage's hot, sweaty atmosphere, while Greenspan lacked the confidence and charisma to captivate the crowd.

Wider recognition remains wishful-thinking but Junior Boys deserve a place at pop's senior school.
