Jurowski not so slow to ctach on
08 September 2008
An ogre from Russian folklore met himself face to face in the LPO’s Prom conducted by Vladimir Jurowksi. The evil Kashchey, who preys on nubile girls, is better known as a star turn in Stravinsky’s Firebird than as the subject of an opera by his teacher, Rimsky-Korsakov, written a few years earlier.
Rimsky’s operas have been slow to catch on. The one-act Kashchey the Immortal (1901-2), especially in a concert performance, shows us why.
Though terrible events are happening in the plot, you are captivated more by the beauteous web of episodic melody, at least until the Storm Knight thunders in, wreaking mass eco-havoc and provoking a cataclysmic explosion of brass fanfares and clanging percussion. Not a moment too soon.
This dramatic flatness could be explained in part by Jurowski’s tendency to cultivate a crystalline orchestral sound. Hardly a complaint; the LPO has rarely fared better than under its current music director. Yet a bit of rough propulsion might have whipped up the necessary menace. The admirable Russian cast were led by soprano Tatiana Monogarova (Princess) and tenor Vyascheslav Voynarovsky in the title role.
Then Jurowski teased The Firebird into incandescent life. Watching three off-stage trumpeters slip on stage just before the end, poised to add glitter to the white-hot finale, is exactly why being there, in the hall, is so exciting. As the Proms season nears its close and Radio 3 announces, in a shy little U-turn, a renewed commitment to live broadcasts, it’s good to be reminded.
