Klash adds reason to his rhymes

Although he has been a hero of the London hip hop scene for most of this decade, 2007 is shaping up to belong to Darren "Klashnekoff" Kandler.

With his production partner, Joe Buhdha, he has released the year's best LP so far - Lionheart: Tussle With The Beast - and on Sunday, making his first appearance with a live backing band, he showed he is not only one of the most accomplished rappers around, but among the most important.

Mixing clarity with humour as his band gave his songs added punch, Klashnekoff's intricate, dazzlingly delivered lyrics were pushed to the fore. Songs such as The Revolution (Will Not Be Televised On Channel U) and Make Ps are erudite pleas for inner-city youth to confront gang and gun culture with self respect, intelligence and integrity - messages that seem more urgent and necessary by the day.

The band were a little rough around the edges, but Klashnekoff 's funkbased-music would lose its bite if it were played with robotic precision.

Instead, this was a night of passion and intensity, where everyone on stage was pushing themselves beyond their limits, performing as if lives - both theirs and ours - were at stake. Inspirational.
