Litmus test at Ronnie Scott's

11 July 2006
Front-of-house staff were a little anxious last night. As the first undiluted jazz artist to appear at this expensively revamped venue, Kenny Garrett was something of a litmus test.
Seasoned jazz fans rate him, but how would his 20-minute solos be received by the cocktail-sipping gourmets and long-haul tourists among the club's new target market? They needn't have worried.
Abrasive yet lyrical, the US alto-sax ace with the clip-miked bell of his horn raised to the ceiling had developed some cool showmanship of his own. With his sharp suit offset by a trademark gnomelike skull-cap and Dizzy Gillespie specs, the ex-Miles Davis star is mellowing into a scholarly hipster.
His intense onstage persona reinforced the image and his habit of chanting his sidemen's names repeatedly after their solos helped swell the applause.
All pointless without talent, but his latest young group, featuring Tynerish pianist Benito Gonzalez, powerful double-bassist Kris Funn and dreadlocked drummer Jamire Williams - another brilliant discovery - was well up to standard.
Garrett originals like Sing Me a Song of Songmy included synth-organ chords from the leader (a novelty) and a tentative minute of clapalong and singalong. Unwise, perhaps, but redeemed by a delicate soprano sax-and-piano medley of Japanese and Korean folksongs, the highlight of an absorbing set by a modern global pied piper.
Ends Wednesday 11 July. (020 7439 0747).
