Londoner giving Jay-Z something to rap about

A music producer from south-west London has been signed by Jay-Z's label to write and produce songs for the hip-hop star and other top artists.

Clayton Morrison, 28, was snapped up by Roc Nation last month after talent scouts spotted him. He is already writing material for the US rapper and has just got back from Los Angeles, where he is working on a project for Disney.

Morrison grew up in Jamaica before moving to London 10 years ago. Brought up on reggae and R&B acts such as Teddy Riley and H-Town, he learned classical piano from an early age and started to write songs as a teenager.

He has worked for artists including Sean Paul, producing a track on the singer's album Imperial Blaze, which was nominated for a Grammy award.
Morrison said: "I haven't met Jay-Z yet because he was away when I was in LA. He's a busy man but I'm writing stuff for him at the moment.

"My music will be played to Rihanna, Eminem, and all the big names so it's likely they will pick it up too. Songwriting is a way of life for me, it's all I know. I like to create, I like to see the thing coming alive. It's a good feeling to hear someone singing your track."

Morrison said he owed part of his success to Wozzy Brewster, founder of the Midi Music Company in Deptford.

The charity offers affordable music courses for children and career development for up-and-coming artists. Morrison became friends with her after attending one of them. He said: "I first met Wozzy when I was going past Midi Music and wandered in there out of curiosity I like her because she's so passionate."

Ms Brewster said he was an "inspiration" to young people who want to make it in the music industry: "He's a worker, he's highly motivated and a dedicated producer."
