Maureen McGovern controls her vocals

It's taken nearly half a century but The Beatles’ oeuvre has finally filtered into US cabaret repertoire. Maureen McGovern, latest diva in the American Songbook in London season, calls her new show (and album) The Long and Winding Road, after one of the Fab Four’s yearning post-LSD ballads.
Let it Be, Imagine and Things We Said Today also resurfaced as the stately redhead zoned into the wistful side of Lennon and McCartney, replacing their original nasal twang with a tender gloss that was somehow inappropriate, like Val Doonican singing Bob Dylan.
Short on banter but strong in vocal control, she can swell a note from a caress to a power-blast capable of singeing wallpaper. She also starts work promptly. Her opening set began at 7.45pm, the cabaret equivalent of dawn, and ended at 9.15 with Knightsbridge still in broad daylight.
This left time to catch another US cabaret star, Mark Nadler, doing his Gershwin tribute at Bellamy’s in Mayfair. An all-action entertainer who has to be seen to be believed, he sang Fascinating Rhythm while simultaneously tap-dancing and playing the piano. He also filled in some history, recalling Al Jolson as "sensational, a sort of male Susan Boyle with less sensible shoes".
With dinner the tab is £85 but you can always put it down on expenses, just like your MP.
