Mirandolina spells it out

Meanwhile, Garsington Opera is set to move to an as yet unspecified location in 2011 as the Ingrams family want their house and garden back. This year’s roster includes the first British performances of Martinu’s Mirandolina. It provides a welcome chance to hear a rarely heard score by the Czech master.
This Goldoni-based comedy features a misogynist who falls for an innkeeper also lusted after by counts, marquesses and servants. Juanita Lascarro brilliantly plays them off against each other, finally giving her heart to the humble servant.
It’s a nice irony that this well-heeled audience should laugh at characters obsessed with wealth and status. No such observation is made in Martin Duncan’s zippy production. Mark Wilde, Geoffrey Dolton, Andrew Slater and Daniel Norman excel as the rival suitors.
Martinu often seems to write by the yard (he composed notoriously fluently and was disinclined to edit his work). More might have been made of the moments of inspiration but the orchestral playing under Martin André’s direction lacked subtlety, light and shade.
The use of an English translation ould have had Leonard Ingrams spinning in his grave. How outrageous to have a comedy in the language of the audience, enabling us to enjoy an impeccably enunciated text instead of reading it in surtitles! Whatever next? Tieless punters? Beer and hotdogs on the lawns?
