Modfather's tireless tour

After 28 years making records, Paul Weller is clearly anxious to live up to his popular title, The Modfather.
The final night of his tour was a tireless effort by the 47-year-old, who raced through a concert of well over two hours. It looked exhausting, yet he remained dapper in skintight jeans and an orange scarf.
Weller will receive an outstanding contribution award at the Brits next year, and his set reflected an astonishing career.
Unfortunately, some workman-like Nineties songs padded out the 140-minute performance. Broken Stones, for instance, had a numbingly tedious organ solo, while his mid-song jams with guitarist Steve Cradock were, at times, gruelling.
Weller's famously chippy manner surfaced, too, when he berated the crowd for being from London and thinking "you're all cool".
But his loyal followers - who ranged from teenage girls and beery lads to ageing Sixties Mods - were eventually rewarded. The recent single From the Floorboards Up sounded fresh and immediate, while Wild Wood prompted the sort of inebriated singalong normally reserved for Oasis.
However, it was Weller's return to his glory days in The Jam that excused his earnest musical endeavours, which included a pointless guest appearance by The Charlatans' Tim Burgess.
That's Entertainment and Town Called Malice still had a palpable anger, while the Style Council's Shout to the Top was a rare moment of fun amid the serious, soulful rock. While his contribution may be outstanding, Paul Weller could certainly be a bit more fun.
