'Mrs Depp' Vanessa Paradis makes heavenly return to limelight

She is now best known for being Johnny Depp's partner - but last night Vanessa Paradis returned to centre stage as a pop star.
The French chanteuse, 38, came to a sold-out Koko for her first UK show in over a decade to promote her greatest hits album Best of Vanessa Paradis, a fabulous collection celebrating a quarter-century of sultry chanson.
Paradis - wavy hair, olive skin and gap-toothed grin all present and correct - lent her sweet-toned voice to a string of French ballads, much to the delight of an audience filled with her fellow countrymen and women.
Sensitive with other artists' material - a cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah was sincere and understated - Paradis was happy to tinker with her own. Joe le Taxi, the single that catapulted a 14-year-old Paradis to fame, was given a bluesy makeover so startling it took the crowd several minutes to recognise it.
If Paradis remained captivating throughout, her music occasionally dragged. No amount of Gallic charm could prevent Bliss sounding like Spandau Ballet's True, or When I Say resembling middle-of-the-road acoustic rock; but these were small blips. Last night was a welcome reminder that Paradis is a singer first and a celebrity's partner second.
