Music to warm a crowd

The bardette of Barnsley has been steadily growing her folksinging talent for the past 15 years or so. Sweeter in vocal tones than her rougher folk scene contemporaries, she has a warbling voice that she sets effectively a-tremble for her sad ballads of self-penned songs. It's not to everyone's taste but you can't deny its sincerity.

Now with a few awards to her name and a stalwart fan base - out in force last night - she has an ease and confidence with her audience and a jokey patter that makes for a comfy, homespun evening combined with her traditional acoustic music.

With a festive set that incorporated less well-known carols and, for a couple of numbers, a fine brass band drawn from the armed forces - "we're safe with them", she quipped - she clearly revelled in the evening of song.

Along with the brass, her acoustic backing band of violin, bass, squeezebox and guitar created a wonderfully full and meticulously precise sound.

But it was her rapport with the audience that wooed them to join in with soft singing and humming that really set her songs off. No more so than in the fine, show-closing Purple Heather. On a cold frosty night, it was the musical equivalent of a welcoming warm cup of mulled wine.
