Nas fans on best behaviour
23 May 2007
Hip-hop fans have never earned a reputation for good manners until last night when rap legend Nas made his triumphant return to the capital.
Whether they feared a repeat of the shooting at his last show here or were intimidated by the large numbers of police outside the venue - some of whom sported sub-machine guns - the crowd behaved as though they'd just emerged from a six-month stint at a Swiss finishing school. That didn't stop them enjoying the show, though.
Dressed in white and sporting a massive old-school medallion, Nas delivered a set that picked out the many high points of a brilliant back catalogue, whether it was the poetically depressing Life's A Bitch from 1994 or the slick gangster swagger of 1996's Affirmative Action.
Nas captivated the die-hard crowd from the start and he knew it, frequently holding the microphone out to allow them to finish a line.
It was a simple show, devoid of special effects and never falling back on razzmatazz. Whether he was performing the bootyshaking Oochie Wally or the thugged-out Made You Look, Nas succeeded on his charisma and his music. But when you're one of hip-hop's greatest-ever lyricists, that's all you need.
