Nitin's appetising world beat

Long in the vanguard of the Anglo-Asian music scene, Nitin Sawhney is an artist who is constantly improving and refining his art while keeping himself guessing and his audience enthralled.

As the co-creator of Goodness Gracious Me, Proms composer, remixer to the gentry (McCartney, Sting) and TV theme dude, Sawhney has become a one man Nitin factory. Last night he was dealing with globalisation, technology, dehumanisation and immigration, but rather than turn all that into heavy, breast-beating and holier than thou pontificating, he allowed an extraordinary cast of musicians to accentuate the extent of his appetising repertoire.

Laying down a funky backbeat and a smooth keyboard wash reminiscent of Donny Hathaway or Stevie Wonder, Sawhney's new Prophesy songs were interpreted by some excellent vocalists - Jayanta Bose, Nina Miranda, Jhelisa Anderson and Tina Grace - while firebrand MC and rapper JC001 kept everyone on their toes.

The singers switched without apparent contradiction between Indian chant, flamenco, soul and edgy European pop, their pieces illustrated by documentary and home-made footage and underpinned by the serene contributions of the ECO and the soothing chatter of Aref Durvesh's tablas.

World music can be a turn-off in the wrong hands. In Nitin Sawhney's grasp, the terminology is simply not relevant.
