No junk odyssey with Mr Kay

Jay Kay, who is the very public face of Jamiroquai, has never sought to win any popularity polls with the press. His much-publicised relationship with uber-Essex girl Denise Van Outen, his fleet of Ferraris, agreeable country spread, his outspoken views, have all given him a flamboyant image that doesn't translate into credibility points.
But judging by his current tour statistics and album sales (the most recent, A Funk Odyssey, went straight to number one), Mr Kay is chortling all the way to the bank. Jamiroquai's smooth blend of old-school soul and groove goes way beyond the confines of acid jazz, and he managed to give Brixton Academy a club-styled makeover that went with the lavish sound and more-bangs-for-your-buck lighting.
When Kay tackles his environmental obsession in Emergency On Planet Earth, you sense that - despite his wealth - he means to plough something back, but won't do it in a fake or humble way. The danceable tunes: Cosmic Girl, Space Cowboy and his end-of-the-affair ditty, Little L, are anthemic, bubbling with R'n'B, elements of techno and a smattering of the French house sound.
So, while he may not be flavour of the month, Jay Kay is a snappy survivor with an audience about his age. That's a pretty useful commodity.
