Not moving with the times

Spiritualized don’t make it easy for themselves or their audience. Having taken five years to record Songs In A&E, just their sixth album in 16 years (admittedly leader Jason Pierce did suffer a life-threatening bout of pneumonia in 2005), they now find that while their songs — part garage Motown, part gloriously sweeping transcendence, part clodhopping plodding — remain very much the same, times have moved on.
Not ones to compromise, they tortured their audience pre-show with ear-splitting, distorted free jazz. During it they maintained their traditional vow of between-song silence, the flat-voiced Pierce (a man, you suspect, for whom any kind of social intercourse is a burden too heavy to bear) refused to face the audience and, more cruel still, they featured their most hopeless album, 2003’s Amazing Grace, more heavily than its five siblings. And, although they numbered nine, including a gospel quartet, there was nothing to see. Actually, since seeing the stage at Koko is a triumph over the laws of probability, perhaps they were just being kind.
Yet, beyond the arrogance, beyond the incessant allusions to heroin and beyond the unspeakably wretched Cheapster and Rated X, there were moments of celestial beauty. Let It Flow flowed majestically; Lord Can You Hear Me, Lord Let It Rain On Me and Walking With Jesus (a refugee from Pierce’s erstwhile home, Spacemen 3) were no-holds-barred gospel, capable of making atheists testify and the new Soul On Fire suggested that while Pierce is not evolving, he’s not sinking either.
