Not your ordinary DJ

He might have a silly name, but DJ Dolores is not your ordinary DJ. For this, the pre-launch party for La Linea - London's Latin music festival - the diminutive Brazilian brought a five-piece band.
Not any ordinary band, either: Aparelhargem (Brazilian slang for sound system) played the sort of Carnaval-esque mix of beats, rock, dub and traditional sounds for which Dolores's laptop and turntables are famous.
That's Carnaval in Recife, not Rio, mind you; Dolores favours the working class styles - frolicking maracat rhythms, declamatory embolada songs - of his north-eastern hometown.
Supported by guitar, percussion, brass and the compelling vocals of Afro-Brazilian frontwoman Isaar, self-penned songs with smart Portuguese lyrics - cherry-picked from his third and current album, 1 Real - were alternately dreamy and upbeat.
Swathes of ambient loops and textures made for a spacious, organic feel. Chants, raps and call-and-response vocals were lifted by funky horns, House-ey thumps and a party whistle. Dolores pogoed a lot and sang a bit, though he shouldn't have.
Cutting-and-pasting - Yazoo's Don't Go over a manque beat, anyone? - is what he does best. That, and knowing how to put on a show.
