Old school rave sends Roundhouse wild
18 October 2007
It's more than a decade since Underworld smashed their way into public consciousness with Born Slippy, a dance track whose brash loutishness was the perfect soundtrack for that drug-fuelled cinematic classic, Trainspotting.
Despite various changes in line-up, the group has created a worthy catalogue of top-class electronic music that they translated effortlessly into last night's euphoric live show.
Clad in a silver jacket, frontman Karl Hyde provided not only ethereal vocals and nice guitar work but the kind of charismatic stage presence that's lacking from almost every other dance act.
Ring Road may be a brand new track from their latest album, Oblivion With Bells, but it embodied the old school rave flavour that the group's thirtysomething fans were clearly determined to recreate.
The unabated joy that the crowd displayed all night made it difficult to pick out highlights, but special mention must be made of Two Months Off. As the boffins micromanaged the passage of crunchy synth stabs through the Roundhouse's impeccable sound system, huge inflatable glo-sticks invaded the stage as Hyde danced like a maniac, leading the ravers to further mayhem.
Born Slippy produced an even more intense reaction.
In terms of atmosphere, it was less like a conventional pop concert and more like an illegal rave. But the crowd's wild behaviour was due to more than nostalgia. This was a brilliant show by anyone's standards.
