Original outlook for Mose Allison
03 June 2008
Between sets, somebody asked Mose Allison if he’d written any songs about present-day living. "Honey, I been writing ’em for 40 years," came the reply, and indeed he has. Allison’s piano work may be stuck in a baroque timelock — an effect heightened by Paul Clarvis’s 1930s drumming — but these street-smart ditties and his bone-dry delivery have always been well ahead of their time.
What’s Your Movie? confronts celeb-culture obsessions. I’m So Glad the World Has Ended (It Wasn’t Workin’ Anyhow) stares global warming in the face, and They Keep Saying Mercy (when they Don’t Know The Meaning of the Word) could apply to Iraq, Tibet or anywhere else where politicians keep saying "Peace for all/Just as soon as we win this war".
You get 20 of these much-imitated songs in two Allison sets, which is good value in any era. Look Whatcha Made Me Do, Who’s Out, Who’s In — a bitter smile flits across Mose’s face as he recites these numbers in a forlorn deep-south croak that finally fits his pallid, white-bearded face.
Now and then a few classic ballads and blues — Do Nuthin’ Till You Hear From Me, You are My Sunshine, Trouble in Mind — take his fancy, and he makes them his own.
Mose is a true original, with a fine double-bassist (Roy Babbington) beside him and a solid week of Soho exposure ahead. So check him out, especially If you’ve never done so before. There are many imitators, but nobody writes or performs an Allison song with the same gritty panache.
I’m Not Disheartened (But I’m Gettin’ There) just about sums him up.
