If David Byrne was your dad, you would be forced to disown him at any social event where there was even the remotest possibility he would dance. His fantastically inept moves at the Shepherd's Bush Empire were worth the entrance fee alone. Bearing an eerie resemblance to Anthony Perkins in Psycho, he lurked menacingly at the rear of the stage as if looking for a shower curtain, only to reverse himself in faux moonwalk-style to the front.

Between bouts of lurching from side-to-side, running on the spot and slapstick, Chaplinesque hip jolts, the ex-Talking Heads frontman was in exuberant musical mood. His pseudo-intellectual pop and detached lyrical delivery hardly commend themselves to a live setting, but with the polyrhythmic thrust of percussion and drums, and the rich texture of a string sextet, studio pretensions were quickly forgotten. Byrne himself, now a silver-haired veteran of New York's art-rock scene, seemed buoyed at the rapturous welcome that manifested itself in football-style chanting of his name.

His wildly eclectic taste has been well documented and this set gave a glimpse into the depth of his creative well. The Revolution, a track from his latest album Behind The Eyeball, was a lush lullaby with a contradictory theme, while Like Humans Do, again from that album, was a piece of bass-fed funky pop with an uplifting chorus. Among his more familiar material was Byrne's take on Verdi's Mysterioso and a vintage puff of Cuban son, all of which was met with overwhelming approval.

Even someone as eccentric as Byrne realised that it was only sensible to finish with his first ever UK number one Lazy. But just when it looked like he was playing it safe, he freewheeled into an oddball cover of Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance With Somebody. Now that's what I call irony!
