Pete 'plays good gig' shock

With Pete Doherty's exploits more a feature in the papers these days than the TV listings, it was no surprise that last night was rammed.

Aside from Doherty's courting of Kate Moss, his drug addiction and court escapades, this week saw a friend plunge to his death at a party.

No mention of tragic actor Mark Blanco last night. More shocking was that the band not only turned up, but were on time. Even more of a pleasant surprise was that they were actually rather good. Maybe the fact he's more famous for his tabloid exploits than for his music has given our anti-hero focus.

The title track from the band's EP The Blinding showed Doherty's songwriting skills. He's still frustrating at times, playing underwhelming tracks and generally acting like Albert Steptoe's lost son, but there's no denying the love his fans afford him.

Another highlight was F*** Forever and during the last song, the anthemic Albion by his previous band The Libertines, Doherty's guitar was thrown into the crowd and he stripped to the waist.

But despite anticipation of a third encore, the lights went up to much booing and consternation from the crowd. You never can tell with Babyshambles.
