Prom cancelled as blaze blacks out Albert Hall

A BBC Proms concert was cancelled after a fire broke out at the Royal Albert Hall.

The blaze started in a basement bar used by performing artists and the sprinkler system caused a power blackout. Ticket holders will get full refunds.

The Philadelphia Orchestra was scheduled to play Beethoven's 9th Symphony and works by Matthias Pintscher at the annual music festival in South Kensington. The concert last night had been due to be broadcast on BBC Four and BBC Radio Three.

London Fire Brigade was called just before 3pm. No one was injured. A spokesman said the cause of the blaze was still being investigated.

The BBC, which runs the concerts, said it hoped that both Proms scheduled for today would go ahead as planned.
