Putting a new spin on turntables

DJ Shadow may have struggled to make his more recent albums match the magnificence of his landmark 1996 debut Endtroducing ... but when it comes to other people's records, he's still a master.

The European debut of the Hard Sell DJ mix, first performed at the Hollywood Bowl last June, was an exemplary, extraordinary display of turntablism.

As the stage name of his partner, Cut Chemist, implied, mixing vinyl with this level of skill is a science. Using eight turntables, two loop effect pedals, four hands and hundreds of seven-inch records, the Californian pair took us on a two-hour rollercoaster ride through all of music.

There was hip hop, soul, doo wop and samba, metal, psychedelia and a Pac-Man-themed Eighties segment, all interlinked thanks to carefully placed stickers that made the records play in loops, and sheer dexterous brilliance.

Pointing out before they began that seven-inches are harder to mix because they are smaller and spin faster than traditional 12-inches, the duo proceeded to interlink Queen, De la Soul, the Flamingoes and Jefferson Airplane, only stopping for a sit-down and a glass of wine during a particularly lengthy drum break. Playing records has never been so complex, or so entertaining.
