Raghu Dixit's international stardom seems assured
18 April 2011
Just one song on Later With Jools and Raghu Dixit's self-titled album became I-Tunes's top world music download.
It's easy to see why. The Indian composer and singer/songwriter has a voice that conjures images of sunsets and rivers, spices and temples; his unique brand of folk-rock fusion blends tradition with urban grit and techno-friendly savvy. That his Hindi and Kannada-language lyrics take inspiration from 18th century Indian poetry and philosophy only underscores his leftfield appeal: "Simple quirky songs that explore complex theories of life," he told us, clad in lunghi and ankle bells and wielding an acoustic guitar.
"Unifying songs," he added, beaming.
This especially commissioned concert saw Dixit and his band in cahoots with South Bank artists-in-residence Bellowhead - or rather, with the British folk collective's fabulously louche horn section and angular percussionist, Pete Flood.
Tracks such as The Girl From Mysore became frenzied Asian-Celtic reels; Brendan Kelly's saxophone slalomed and skidded through Rain Song, a new number that saw Dixit strumming flamenco-style and the Kathak dancer Gauri Sharma Tripathi putting her own modern spin on centuries-old folklore. A full house sang, danced and cheered throughout.
"A year ago I was unknown," marvelled Dixit, whose international stardom seems assured.
