Rascal Flatts are hard to hate

Country-rock trio Rascal Flatts were America's biggest selling band in 2006. Over here they are just starting out, hence this low-key UK debut for a couple of hundred competition winners.

Such is their multi-million selling status, it took two record label executives to introduce them, including an excitable American called Randy who drolly suggested that "the world is Flatts".

Frontman Gary LeVox was still humbled to discover that a few dozen people in London recognised his wholesome songs. Aside from a few bursts of violin and mandolin, this set was really just the sound of Middle America - soft rock and power ballads.

LeVox's spiky blond hair and large frame meant he looked more like a stand-up comedian than a rock star and he had some funny lines. "The more you drink the better we sound," he admitted.

That was undoubtedly true of the air-punching Take Me There. But while LeVox sang well and the band harmonies were spot on, this easygoing performance became tiresomely upbeat.

It's hard to hate Rascal Flatts. That may change if Randy's plan for world domination comes to pass.
