Rebels ration their ideas
03 April 2008
Loud, Louder, Stop. The title of this group’s latest Candid album could describe their music (actually much subtler last night) or a general mood of youthful rebellion. Dinosaur Die, their hard-hitting opener, was dedicated to a Sunday newspaper critic who belittled one of their performances. "Never mind that," quipped Cowley. "It’s Dino Krall up here tonight."
All good clean fun, yet something significant is stirring in piano-trio land, a new jazz for a rock-dominated age. Like Esbjörn Svensson’s EST and The Bad Plus, Cowley’s trio makes a virtue of repetition. Unlike the jazz giants of old, masters of thematic development who scattered pearls of wisdom with abandon, these "jam bands" ration ideas to a bare minimum. They have found that considerable rhythmic tension can be built by setting a single jazz phrase against funk or rock beats and beating it to death with only slight chordal modifications.
Though mentally numbing one could admire the physical effort, plus the classically trained touch that Cowley needed to vary his dynamics, and the hours of rehearsal that saw him, bassist Richard Sadler and drummer Evan Jenkins play tricky pieces (Clumsy Couple, Captain Backfire) so precisely. Cargo’s crowd enjoyed it.
