SBTRKT, XOYO - review
05 October 2011
Dance music producers are usually fairly anonymous figures but SBTRKT (pronounced "subtract") wears a tribal mask on stage to focus attention away from him and on to his latest tunes.
It's a ploy that failed as he's been outed as south Londoner Aaron Jerome, who's erased his old website and MySpace and probably wishes he could do the same with his smooth, jazzy debut from 2008.
Although SBTRKT is an achingly cool project drawing on dubstep, indie and garage, Jerome couldn't conceal his enthusiasm. He seemed genuinely excited to be on stage as he fiddled with a laptop and jumped behind a drum kit.
It's rare to see a dance producer pounding the drums but Jerome's curious combination of man-made beats and computer music was spectacular.
Vocalist Sampha wore a mask, too, and his soulful voice added a further human dimension to the jittery rhythms and shuddering bass of
Hold On and Living Like I Do.
The dancing fans cheered as SBTRKT switched from the hip-swinging, melodic Trials of the Past to full-on club mode on Pharaohs, featuring the fantastically named singer Roses Gabor. Vocals were sampled and cut up in a frenetic performance that only suffered technical problems when Jerome tried to play his Radiohead remix.
SBTRKT had outstanding songs of their own, particularly Wildfire with its woodpecker beats,
squelchy bass and pre-recorded guest rap from Drake.
Thanks to his triumphant career reinvention, Jerome can look forward to plenty more big-name collaborations.
