Scream louder for JLS

For a few thousand young girls, and in some cases their mums too, JLS were a Valentine’s weekend treat. The four lads wearing big grins and fingerless leather gloves may have lost the 2008 X Factor to Alexandra Burke but the delirium among the Apollo audience was proof of their enduring appeal.
The slinky pop of opener Private, punctuated with identikit boy band choreography, was adequate, although the screaming intensified when Aston Merrygold later asked: "Anyone fancy getting a bit private with one of the guys on stage?"
JLS were more convincing when such mild sauciness was incorporated into the performance: the crowd erupted during Only Making Love as they ground their hips and twirled canes.
Merrygold was certainly the most popular. So Jonathan "JB" Gill, Oritse Williams and Marvin Humes deferred to his crowd-pleasing backflips and let him kick off the Michael Jackson medley with I Want You Back.
Yet JLS’s strength was their unity, with the high-fives and seamless harmonies suggesting they won’t be troubled by musical differences. Their reiteration of the boy band format has sold a million albums, and the robotic pop of Beat Again and One Shot stood out here. Only Tonight and Everybody in Love also had the fans swooning.
However, this show could have been more ambitious. The only apparent live instrumentation involved their DJ strumming acoustic guitar during one song, while the lads had few options on stage beyond climbing a set of steps or walking down a set of steps.
There was also a segment of the concert where they urged fans to scream louder and louder, which ultimately became torture. But based on the infectious tunes, JLS probably deserve their three nominations at tomorrow’s Brits.
