Seamless blend of emotion and energy

You don't have to be a jazz fan to admire Roby Lakatos. Back in London after five years, this wonderful gipsy violinist has become the unofficial world champ on the death of Taraf de Haidjouks's hero, an elderly icon who could play the fiddle with a length of ordinary cotton thread.
This much younger Hungarian sextet tore into their work with a seamless blend of emotion and energy. Their opener, The Fire Dance, encompassed the full gipsy experience.
Tempos fluctuated freely to accommodate vast mood swings, from heart-rending balladry to frenzied full-out excitement. Papa Can You Hear Me, a Michel Legrand number, was a violin-piano duet of extraordinary finesse. Honeysuckle Rose, begun at a stealthy half-tempo, ended in a blazing contrapuntal two-violin jam.
Frantisek Janoska displayed the piano wizardry expected of an alumnus of Budapest's Liszt Academy.
Jeno Liszetes played the cimbalom, a horizontal harp struck with long-handled mallets, with amazing speed and accuracy, and second violinist Laszlo Boni has worked with Lakatos since childhood. I don't know the Hungarian for "Bravo!" but that's what patrons were shouting after each number.
