Sharpness from Sheffield

Marvellously orchestrated hype or word-of-mouth forest fire? Either way, Arctic Monkeys will be very huge, very soon.

Last night's signs were obvious: a sold-out gig upgraded from The Mean Fiddler; a crowd giddy with anticipation and sufficiently fervent to sing along to unreleased songs. Already, the Sheffield quartet's every move has a sense of occasion.

The sound of 2006 has Franz Ferdinand-esque choppy guitars, a firewall of punky noise leavened by a Buzzcockian romanticism and, in Alex Turner, a singer with a wry eye for vignettes of the northern drinking classes.

It's a winning combination that confidently strayed into reggae skank or prog-rock squall.

They wear their Franz Ferdinand influence a little too garishly and between songs they either panicked or regressed to bashful 12-year-olds.

While A Certain Romance may be their Take Me Out, the centrepiece of their hour, Vampires Is The Bit Strong But ..., showed a band punching way above their brief history.
