Slick and Simply unique

You can't go out of fashion if you were never in fashion in the first place. Alongside a uniquely expressive voice and a talent for creating easy-listening anthems, this is one of the secrets of Mick Hucknall's success.

Last night, the soulful Mancunian proved this point emphatically with a slick, passionate performance that repeatedly brought the audience to its feet. His flash stage dressing and 20-strong band might have looked suspiciously like a smoke screen to mask a voice no longer able to do justice to Simply Red's admittedly demanding repertoire, but this was far from the case.

Warming up with You Make Me Smile, a piece of unreconstructed, old-time crooning, his voice displayed its full richness as he delighted the crowd with a sensitive rendition of Holding Back the Years.

The sweat on his forehead and veins on his neck testified that Hucknall was giving it his all as he rattled through a traditional but varied set that included an impressive jazzy version of Barry White's It's Only Love.

By the time he belted out his monster hit, Stars, it was clear from the reaction of the clapping, dancing throng that Hucknall's energy and musicianship are more than enough to compensate for his love of cheesey guitar solos and excessively unbuttoned shirts.
