A fabulous trombone intro, and there they were. Brazil’s greatest Afro-bossa band, making their live UK debut 50 years after first wowing the Copacabana with their pioneering mix of bossa, samba, jazz and music from the Candomble religion.

The Ipanemas have always taken their time: their classic 1962 debut was followed by The Return of the Ipanemas — some four decades later.

Now, with their current album The Call of the Gods winning praise and London’s La Linea Latin Music Festival (until 3 May) providing the framework, the band cruised into town like a well-oiled machine. They might have lost one of their linchpins with the non-appearance of original guitarist Neco but Jose Carlos Batista proved a worthy replacement. Special guests Alex Mahleiros and Ivan Conti of jazz funk trio Azymuth kept things smooth and swinging.

The real star and only original Ipanema was vocalist and percussionist Wilson Das Neves. Small, wiry and upbeat, wearing a pork-pie hat, he danced sambas and sang self-penned songs such as Era Bom. "He is my teacher, my friend," said kit-drummer (and Ipanemas producer) Conti, while bear-hugged by Das Neves, who slapped the congas, squeaked the cuica drum and twanged the berimbau, then doffed his hat to the crowd.
