Solo Jorge keeps his cool

This was to be a Brazilian double bill: Seu Jorge, street-kid turned actor/singer/songwriter, dubbed "the coolest man on the planet" by style mags and the South Bank Show.
Afro-reggae, a revolutionary 14-piece big band from Rio's powderkeg slums, kept home in the end by legal wrangles (check out their acclaimed documentary, Favela Rising, screening at the ICA).
Radio 1's own Brazilophile, Gilles Peterson, braved the decks instead, bigging up the headliner - "the next Bob Marley" - and Arsenal's 3-0 victory between spinning sunny, beat-driven tunes.
If the suave Mister Jorge felt pressured to carry the night, it didn't show. Guitar slung low, eyes hidden behind stray dreadlocks, he sang his catchy Portuguese-language songs (Carolina, Tiva Razao) in a voice both raw and tender, with a nonchalance that only added to his charisma.
Backed by a tight-knit band on guitars, double bass and squeaky cuíca drum, Jorge's original and determinedly popular mix of samba, bossa and urban stylings delighted a good-natured crowd.
After a raucous percussion jam - cuíca, congas, various objects hit with sticks - Jorge took the spotlight for cracked, acoustic versions of David Bowie's Rebel Rebel and Life On Mars. Attention wandered during the unfamiliar, meandering excursion that followed, but was recaptured with a singalong to Jorgé Ben Jor's Mas Que Nada - a football anthem if ever there was one.
