Solo Webbe isn't looking quite so Blue
13 December 2006
Once his boy band Blue disintegrated, the future that beckoned for former model Simon Webbe seemed to be one where he was asking if you'd like an extra topping with your pizza.
But then again, no. He's carved out a solo career, become a star in south-east Asia and, to show just how authentic a singer-songwriter he is, written some of his albums.
While it was far from clear why his uncomplicated, Lighthouse Family-lite music needed three guitarists, two keyboardists and four backing singers, the Moss Side storyteller was in combative form.
"I'm not being big-headed," he growled to nobody in particular before My Soul Pleads For You, "but people say Simon Webbe songs are easy to sing. You come up here and sing them in my baritone, then."
Indeed for all his hubris, he was terrified to make any boy band moves. Therefore, he made no moves at all and consequentially looked awkward. His voice, though, often soared, not least on the gospel-tinged Lay Your Hands.
He was much more comfortable in the topless, tattoo-bearing encore, where a terrific sprint through The Killers' When You Were Young and a joyful No Worries were hints at what may yet be.
