Ray Lamontagne does not make things easy for himself or his audience. Last night, he elected to perform facing his three musicians rather than the adoring audience; to avoid such fripperies as lighting and movement and, just to ratchet up the tension, to say nothing between songs until his resolve broke 53 minutes in when he introduced his band.
Embarking upon a world tour may be a peculiar course of action for one seemingly so painfully shy, but Lamontagne's uncompromising stance was not entirely born of lofty disdain toward a crowd for whom fireworks are patently not everything.
His songs of despair and self-loathing speak eloquently enough and the genuine anguish that singing Burn seemed to cause him was proof the bearded backwoodsman was not going through the motions. Yet such subtleties were inevitably lost in the most unforgiving of venues.
Musically, though, despite the legion wonders of his current album Till The Sun Turns Black, he has taken a step sideways, covering The Band's Further On Up The Road and unnecessarily countrifying You Can Bring Me Flowers.
Not until the encore did Lamontagne's guard drop, quietly responding to a declaration of love with: "You're so sweet."
Better still, horn and string sections brought colour to a hitherto grey world and Be Here Now, Till The Sun Turns Black itself and Within You were delivered with the beauty he routinely exudes, but also the elan that he rarely dares to set free.
Tonight (0871 2200 260).
