Piano duos are rare in contemporary jazz but the unlikely pairing of a dashing young Italian discovery and wise old French-Algerian master worked a treat here. Stefano Bollani is 28 and Martial Solal 83 but their mutual respect was there for all to see.

Bollani opened in flamboyant mood, giving solo versions of Tico Tico and After You've Gone, a hit-and-miss brilliance that fell somewhere between Art Tatum and Les Dawson, but the real fireworks came with the arrival of Solal. He's a durable hybrid of Duke Ellington and the bebop era, a coiner of chunky chords and pleasing dissonances. Together they invested Body and Soul, Sweet Georgia Brown and other standards with off-the-cuff devices that somehow kept dovetailing into place.

Poland's supporting trio were equally impressive, although for obvious reasons Marcin Wasilewski (piano), Slawomir Kurkiewicz (bass) and Michal Maskiewicz (drums) are unlikely to become household names. I'd rename them Silk and Steel or MW3. The leader's style, an amalgam of Keith Jarrett and Herbie Hancock, is class.

A worthy concert, this was sponsored by EFG International, bankers who support excellence in jazz piano. Give credit where credit's due.
