Stereophonics, O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire - review

A quiet year for Stereophonics ended in noisy fashion with three greatest hits sets in Shepherd's Bush. Part of just seven headline shows in 2011, and following on from some album track-by-track concerts a year ago, with deluxe early album reissues and a hits collection in the shops, it looks as if the Welsh band have fully made the transition to nostalgia act. But it's never wise to write them off, as proven by the late-period success of their greatest song, Dakota.

Its whooshing synth line, chiming guitars and vital chorus predictably had the last word here.

Before that euphoric encore there was a thorough trawl through an extensive back catalogue, with a businesslike band saying little and concentrating on volume.

Some more recent songs such as Trouble and She's Alright were serious, heavy rock, depending more on furious energy than melody.

The tuneful ones had greater appeal, the crowd going collectively spare during Just Looking and a deliciously extended pause in the middle of Have a Nice Day.

At the close, singer Kelly Jones claimed that his band's virtual year off was going to result in not one but two new albums next year. As I said, don't write off another giant hit being in there somewhere.
