Sugababes hit London

10 April 2006
More brazenly than any other British act, Sugababes have become an interchangeable pop 'brand'. Yet more strikingly, they have performed with real personality through each phase of the process.
Keisha Buchanan is the trio's only original member now that Amelle Berrabah has replaced their spikiest vocalist, Mutya Buena. Amelle's presence adds a more slick, soulful element to familiar tunes - and she's proved a coolly confident addition on this British tour.
Their enduring attitude - stylishly moody rather than cloyingly sweet - rules out much wackiness, while their strong harmonies pleasingly offset the tales of internal bitchery.
But key to Sugababes' success, and live setlist, is their fabulously evolving singles collection, from schoolgirl debut Overload (the original trio was signed aged just 14), to chart-topping mash-up Freak Like Me, via the ballad Too Lost In You, and the likes of Push The Button from their latest album, Taller In More Ways. Sugababes shift shape and tempo to fix our attention - and that's classic pop to the core.
Tonight and tomorrow, Hammersmith Apollo, Queen Caroline Street W6, 7pm, £23 (tonight returns only). Tel: 0870 606 3400. Tube: Hammersmith
