'A nucleus of foreign languages on a triple lane highway' promises - or warns- the programme. To drive us along it, the Swedish Lisa Torun and her threedancers perform Triptych, an extended three-part pas de deux.
We begin with two women stepping back and forth to snatches of static, song, engine noises. They sing and talk. According to the programme, one is aFinnish gymnast and masseuse, the other an opera-hybridized-rock-singer. No,I don't know what that means either, even having watched it. True, SatuElovaara is Finnish, and Torun sings, but further elucidation remains in thedepths of Torun's mind.
In the second pas de deux Tim Blowfield and Olaf Schmidt are dressed in nattyred skirts over trousers, presumably to resemble Dervishes. But there is nowhirling. Instead, after a stately promenade in a circle, they face eachother and talk (in Swedish and German) about what they plan to take on theirvoyage. Where they're going remains a mystery too.
Finally, Schmidt and Torun return, to perform a duet that for the first timeshows Torun's strengths. There is a real relationship here - they are dancingtogether not because they are dancers and that is their job, but becauseTorun has created a world for them to inhabit. They are playful, relaxed, andthey turn in a fine performance.
In all of this, Torun's choreography can get lost, which is a shame, becauseshe has some good things to show. Her palette is a bit monotone, themovements simplified past the point that they can carry over an hour, but shehas the potential to be a real force, both as a choreographer and aperformer.
