Switches turn on an electric show

For all the reservations you might have about Switches' brand of join-the-dots guitar pop, their performance last night to a packed 100 Club was top notch.

Frontman Matt Bishop postured and pouted his way through most of their daftly-titled but catchy debut album Heart Tuned To D.E.A.D.

Opener Drama Queen set the tone with its treble-heavy riffs and sugary pop harmonies. If you can excuse vacuous lyrics and shameless repetition, the chantable choruses made for a great live act, and this is a band clearly bent on taking fans by force.

It was a shame the energy of those on stage wasn't matched by the audience which, though appreciative, had all the sparkle of soggy cabbage.

Well done to Switches for maintaining their momentum undeterred - punchy single Lay Down The Law preceding a quick-fire encore that ended with a cleverly-tweaked version of the clattering Message From Yuz.

Their album may not stand up to close scrutiny but, live, this lot are worth watching.
