Tasty set from Zoe Rahman

"I’ve been coming here for 20 years," said pianist Zoe Rahman, "and I’ve never seen so many Bangalis here." Best night yet of the Britjazz09 fortnight, this delightful double bill was a sign of the growing Asian influence in British jazz.

Delightful because whatever these rising stars may lack in technique they more than make up in feeling. And because expressive performers are also enjoyable to watch.

Arun Ghosh plays clarinet with lithe intensity and his beautiful harmonies with tenorist Idris Rahman sounded Ellingtonian at times. His rhythm section included Nilesh Gulhane on tablas and pianist Kishoo Khan, the evening’s most sophisticated blend of east and west.

Idris’s elder sister Zoe is an altogether different kettle of kedgeree. Educated at Berklee and firmly established on the British scene, she sounds particularly good lately because new bassist Davide Mantovani complements drummer Gene Calderazzo perfectly. Their high-energy post-bop brilliance enhanced themes by Joanne Brackeen, Abdullah Ibrahim and Bengali writer Rabindranath Tagore, with Idris joining them on clarinet. Very tasty indeed.
