Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a singer of Pavarotti-like stature and popularity, who brought Pakistani Sufi music to a huge international audience until his death a decade ago.

Marking that anniversary, this concert featured his nephew, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who was trained by and often performed with Nusrat.

The style of Islamic devotional music popularised by Nusrat is qawwali, featuring ecstatic vocals accompanied by harmonium, tablas and handclaps. Largely thanks to Nusrat, it's become popular in concert halls around the world, although I last heard Rahat in a sensational traditional performance at a shrine in Pakistan.

Perhaps to avoid comparisons, last night Rahat performed Nusrat's classic songs with added saxophone, keyboard and bass guitar.

He has a pure, focused voice but the arrangements were qawwali-lite and overamplified, perhaps in a misguided attempt to lend them some weight. The highlight was a collaboration with American guitarist and composer Michael Brook, who worked with Nusrat on his best-selling albums Mustt Mustt and Night Song.

This was classic qawwali fusion and Rahat should have had the confidence to precede it with something more traditional.
