The Big Pink are worth watching

It was over less than an hour after it began, but The Big Pink’s 50-minute set at the Electric Ballroom more than confirmed them as one of the year’s most exciting bands.

The London duo take their name from an album by Bob Dylan’s one-time backing group, The Band but there was little folksy about the dark, dense, songs on display here, which were taken from their excellent debut, A Brief History of Love.
Nor was there anything remotely Dylanseque about the appearance of vest-wearing vocalist Robbie Furze, who couldn’t have looked more rock’n’roll if he’d come free with a copy of the NME.

The duo, which also includes keyboardist Milo Cordell, were joined by a bassist and drummer on the night whose ethereal harmonies endowed Too Young To Love with a haunting, hymnal quality early on.

Part of The Big Pink’s appeal lies in their seemingly wholehearted embrace of the "live fast, die young" ethic. "We’re better off dead," roared Furze as Count Backwards From Ten reached its thundering climax amid whoops of excitement.
The boys showed their sensitive side, too. Furze squeezed every last drop of emotion from a cover of Otis Redding’s These Arms Of Mine. Behind the wall of processed beats, lies a beating heart.

By the time the fist‑pumping psychedelia of Dominos took us home, it was clear that The Big Pink are one band worth falling for.
