Titanic collaboration

Billed as a tribute to Allen Ginsberg, the silliest of the beat poets, this collaboration between two American cultural titans (and, occasionally, Smith's long-term foil, Lenny Kaye) instead highlighted their own strengths as much as their departed friend's.

Glass, a well-preserved 70 this year and the subject of the Barbican's Glassworks weekend, remains the public face of minimalism and arguably - with a nod to Aaron Copland - the United States's greatest 20th century composer. Even so, his solo piano pieces, particularly the sprawling but frisky (and, let's be frank, toe-tapping) Night On The Balcony, were dazzling, in an understated kind of way.

Wary of the event slipping into pretension - some audience members wore berets - Smith was mesmerising on her own Ghost Dance and My Blakean Year, but light on her presentational feet, telling tall tales of wearing glasses and the vigil for Ginsberg she and Glass were part of.

With Glass revelling in his sideman's role and creating a gentle, intricate backdrop behind her, she gave Ginsberg's ludicrous Footnote To Howl ("the bum's as holy as the seraphim", indeed) renewed authenticity and an emotional kick. "Allen would have loved this night," chuckled Smith. So he would.

Smith and Glass's reputations are hardly in danger of being sullied, but this lovely performance enhanced them further. They should do it again one day.
