Unpredictable Dwele out of the comfort zone

Andwele Gardner knows how to get people on his side. At the start of a threenight residency, the Detroit new-school soul man interspersed hypnotic songs like I Think I Love U with self-deprecating stories and affable asides.

Dwele's music - all moods and texture - often simmers without boiling. But he was clearly aware of the need for something unpredictable. So taking his lead from Mercury Prize nominee Soweto Kinch, who had earlier played as though his life depended on it, Dwele decided to tear up the set list half way through his show and take requests.

The band looked panicked, but it made them change up a gear. Soon guitarist Andre Frappier was launching into a solo which would have made Van Halen proud.

With a few more songs that push them out of their comfort zone, this band will be a scary proposition.
