Veteran Beasties still have it

Their all-instrumental album may be an experiment that went awry, but at least, after 22 years, The Beastie Boys are still experimenting. The spirit of boundless innovation that the New York rap/rock veterans have always displayed was in evidence last night, as was a level of professionalism that puts many younger artists to shame.

The show started with a bang. Huge plectrum and boomerangshaped panels above the stage lit up dramatically as their tour DJ, Mixmaster Mike delivered an overwhelming onslaught of cuts and scratches, blending classic snippets from hip-hop history. Ad Rock, MCA and Mike D earned a rapturous cheer merely for strutting on stage in sharp suits and sunglasses, exuding their usual level of cockiness, charisma and cool as they hyped the crowd up with their distinctively teenage-sounding nasal tones.

When a large band appeared, my heart sank as I thought the show might turn into a self-indulgent jam. In fact, they played their hearts out, using instruments and DJ to superb effect as they leaped from punk to funk to rap, showcasing new work while breathing new life into their classics.

Time to Get Ill, for instance, was cunningly remixed with MIA's club hit, Galang. The wild reception given to favourites like Intergalactic proved I wasn't alone in wanting more rap and less instrumental noodling. But there's no doubt about it: the Beastie Boys have still got it.
