Veteran US band still rocking

"Anyone at Dingwalls in 1983?" asked Los Lobos's frontman, accordionist and guitarist David Hidalgo.
That gives you some indication of how long in the tooth (and, now, how wide in the girth) this US band is.
Originally called Los Lobos Del Este Los Angeles and perhaps best known for its cover of La Bamba for the film of the same name, this group has been pumping out its bluesy blend of Latin-influenced, Mexican-American rock since 1973.
Last night they seemed most comfortable riffing with old-style R'n'B in front of a 40-something, grey or balding, and mostly male crowd in a half-empty Shepherds Bush Empire.
Half-empty, or half-full? You could take that attitude to this band's show. Half-empty: it was reminiscent of a jobbing 12-bar pub rock band.
But half-full it spun a lovely tight-knit warm rocking sound that hit, appositely, a high note with High Places halfway through the set and trumped it with a fabulous rendition of Traffic's Dear Mr Fantasy for the encore.
Cesar Rosas, guitarist and dead ringer for Soprano Silvio Dante, shouted "Thank you London!" as they left the stage.
As a valediction it was cliché - but it was sincere. A bit like the show, really.
