White Lies are worth the hype

25 February 2009
Be it via TV, radio or trendy music magazine, you will find out about White Lies sooner or later. They are 2009’s latest indie phenomenon...the kind of indie that is sensible enough to keep it accessible. Hence, the number one debut album.
It’s fitting then that this group of youthful-looking West Londoners played Levi’s One to Watch gig.
They may only be on the verge of breaking into the industry but Harry McVeigh and his band have already amassed a loyal following. Playing at the Borderline, their teenage girl fans safely secured the front row spots, cameras and autograph pens in hand.
But they deserve more than 'alternative-looking hearthrob' status. Their sound is mature for their twenty-something years and they have already penned some stand-out tracks.
Farewell to the Fairground was a wise single choice. They perform this catchy number well and the retro keyboard gives it an uplifting edge. Let’s not compare White Lies to U2 because that would be silly but you would be forgiven for thinking there was something of the euphoric anthem, that the afore mentioned do all too well, waiting to get out. Death, for instance, has the ingredients for a big stadium hit - a strong bass, distinct piano part and all important drum/vocal fusion towards the end.
So, they have got a record deal, decent songs and a frontman that carries them off with a powerful voice. What’s the next step? A leap in status. It’s time to stop labelling them as the next big thing and give them the hit single to follow up the album success. With it should come the confidence to make even better records.
*White Lies played the Ones to Watch show to celebrate the launch of Levi's Carnaby Street Store. They will play the NME's Big Gig at the 02 Arena on 26 February and support Snow Patrol on their UK tour.
