Smooth delivery

Gary Hume
Bold: Hume's series of bronze sculptures

Greg Meeson, Metro 10 Sep 2007

Gary Hume delivers another solid showcase of gloss-onaluminium paintings and some equally gloss-clad bronze sculptures in this latest exhibition. In years past, when he and fellow YBAs were shaping a brave new future for British art, Hume delivered a shock or two (his 'Me As King Cnut' performance video, where he sat in a tin bathtub fully dressed and smoking, won't be forgotten in a hurry). Now, well into mid-career stability and holding court in the White Cube's fancy Mason's Yard pad, his smooth delivery of yet more shiny treats comes as no surprise.

Drawing influence from time spent in New York, American Tan sees Hume reflect on the global influence of America through the image of the cheerleader. Hume's dissection of American culture is as glossy as the paint but his steady evolution of technique delivers results as rich as ever. He finds new ground to explore while retaining the classic ingredients that continue to delight - and yet again reinforces his status as a key figure in British contemporary art.

Hume's boldest move is his new series of bronze sculptures (pictured). Modelled on mannequin limbs and fused together in pairs with the occasional pom-pom thrown in, they form a striking mix of anatomical perfection and grotesque disfigurement. Packed with cheerleader innocence, a brutal sexuality and topped off with comical kitsch, they are the best thing here.
