Michael Collins is curious about London Cityscapes

London Cityscapes
Different view: South-East to Northumberland Avenue, 2008, mutes the grey of Nelson’s Column but picks out buses in red

6 May 2009

The five immense colour photographs on display at City Hall reveal details of London far from the camera’s usual vantage points. The success of Michael Collins’s ongoing project relies on plate cameras used in the earliest photographic surveys of the city and, crucially, on digital printing.

This fascinating documentary of London’s chaotic layers of urban planning and design also draws on the scientific approach seen in Collins’s previous works. He trawled the City archives for 19th-century “bird’s eye” lithographs — the first such surveys of London — and now updates the historical record.

Looking “South from Blackfriars”, he stands high above rail tracks as if straddling a model railway. From the North, he faces the Thames beaches and focuses on red stumps of an old bridge which he reproduces in their exact tones.

While muting the overall colours of the landscapes to greys, blues and browns, he brightly details chosen objects — a red crane and buses, a blue window-cleaners’ trolley.

Such vast scales and details evoke Andreas Gursky’s works but Collins maintains the reality viewed through his camera without digital manipulation. Hovering over the City of London for the enthralling South from the Tower, he highlights a dwarfed Georgian house among the tangled external organs of the Lloyd’s Building and the mismatched architecture of the area.

Collins’s interpretations of our chaotically choreographed capital stand as records of the curious decisions made throughout history — and are lasting mementoes of his dedication.
